Swansea University – Phase One

Swansea, United Kingdom

The first phase of the refurbishment of Swansea University’s Singleton Park has now been completed across multiple buildings, with luminaires and control systems supplied by Thorlux Lighting.

Established in 1920 and situated on the south coast of Wales, Swansea University is rooted in a tradition of research and innovation. The university comprises eight colleges across two campuses. The Singleton Park Campus is west of Swansea city centre and home to the Taliesin Theatre and the Swansea Bay Sports Park.

The first phase of the lighting refurbishment has taken place over a period of several years, centring on key campus buildings, including the Richard Price Building, the Grove, the Law Library, James Callaghan Building, the Library, Fulton House, the Talbot Building, the Faraday Lecture Theatres, and Glyndwr (home to Swansea University’s College of Human and Health Sciences).

The refurbishment uses the Thorlux SmartScan Generation 2 platform and self-testing SmartScan Emergency luminaires. The SmartScan luminaires were specified to complement the aesthetics of each building and achieve the energy-saving criteria that site managers demanded.

Thorlux SmartScan is a groundbreaking wireless lighting control system designed to oversee the energy efficiency and operational data of both standard and emergency luminaires equipped with SmartScan technology. The relevant information is stored conveniently on the password-protected SmartScan website. Within SmartScan luminaires, an embedded discrete sensor actively observes ambient light and occupancy, ensuring optimal output levels and providing artificial illumination only when necessary. Projects incorporating SmartScan frequently achieve impressive energy savings, surpassing 70% compared to traditional technologies.
